Bitter Gourd Curry / Pavvakai Puli Curry

One More bitter gourd recipe from me, I learnt this from my mom.This is my mom's speciality dish and our family favourite dish too.People who do not like bitter gourd will also like this curry for sure. Bitter gourd is quite bitter when raw but it gives wonderful taste once it is cooked properly.It is a low calorie vegetable which has many nutritional benefits. Bitter gourd can play a role in the prevention and treatment of Type II diabetes.So just cook it the right way and you have a healthy, nutrient filled recipe that will work best for your palate. 

Ingredients :

Bitter Gourd
Red chillies
Small lemon size
Grated Coconut
3 tbsp
Curry leaves
Mustard seeds
1 tsp
Channa dal
1 tsp
3 tbsp

Steps :

  1. Wash and cut the bitter gourd into very small pieces.
  2. Soak the tamarind in 2 cups of warm water.
  3. Heat oil in pan add mustard seeds once it splutters,add channa dal,curry leaves and add  sliced onions and red chillies fry til turns pink.
  4. Then add bitter gourd pieces fry well in oil till raw smell leaves then close and cook for 5 mins in a medium heat.
  5. Then add turmeric powder,salt and tamarind water mix well and cover and cook for 25 mins, don't open the lid till it gets cooked.
  6. Once it gets cooked and oil separates add grated coconut mix well and turn off the stove.
  7. Serve hot with white rice.
Note :

Cook in low flame and don't open till it gets cooked.
It tastes very well when we eat next day.

    I love bitter guard curry. My mom prepares it when ever I am in Kerala.At home we prepares pavakka pulicurry in a different way. Please take a look at our preparation also and let me know your comments.
