Snake Gourd Kootu / Pudalangai Kootu



Today I am sharing a simple South Indian Kootu recipe which is very common in my house. Snake gourd is rich in fibre.I am sure you will not regret preparing this as it tastes so good.It goes well with rice and any kara kuzhambu.


Ingredients


Pudalangai/Snake Gourd                - 1
Yellow Moong dal / Pasi Parupu      - 3 Tbsp
Channa dal / kadalai Parupu            - 1/4 cup      
Turmeric Powder                             - 1 tsp
Salt  as required

Wash and soak both the dhals in water for 15 mins

For Grinding


Urad dal                                      - 1tsp
Cumin Seeds                               - 1 tsp
Coriander seeds                          - 1 tsp
Green chillies                               - 4
Gratted Coconut                          - 1/4 cup
Small onion                                  - 3

Heat a tsp of oil and fry the above ingredients, adding coconut at the end. Grind it to a smooth paste adding little water.

For Seasoning


Mustard seeds                            - 1tsp
Urad dal                                      - 1tsp
Curry leaves                               - 1 sprig
Oil                                               - 1 tbsp

Method

  1. Clean and cut the snake gourd into smaller size cubes.
  2. Pressure cook snake gourd and soaked dhals with turmeric powder and salt in enough water for upto 3 whistles or until cooked.
  3. Open the pressure cooker after the pressure gets released by itself. Add the ground paste and salt and mix well, bring to boil.
  4. Heat oil in a pan, season with items given for seasoning, mix to the above kootu.
